Trainer’s Thoughts

We were out of luck at Navan on Saturday but positives could be taken from the runs of both Grougha Stable runners. Confident Kid travelled very well for a long way and we just think the trip may have stretched him slightly. See Of Rome was short of room inside the final couple of furlongs but we were very happy with how he finished his race off. We are still learning about these two new arrivals to the yard and we are certain we have yet to see the best of them. We go back into the breach with Red Avenger on Sunday at Naas and below you can read Damian’s thoughts on his chances.

Red Avenger and Rory Cleary winning at the Curragh

Red Avenger

When I saw the weather forecast for the weekend I decided to declare Red Avenger for the closing race on Beresford Stakes day at Naas, a mile handicap at 5.35. The ground should really suit Red at Naas and he will be partnered by his regular jockey Rory Cleary. I was very happy with how Red Avenger performed at Laytown last time over 7f where he kept on well to finish fourth off 74 with JJ King taking off 3lb.

Red races off 71 at Naas on Sunday, just two pounds higher than when he gave us our first ever winner at the Curragh back in July. That win came over 7f on good to firm ground and the extra furlong should pose no problems at Naas. Red is a tricky customer who has loads of ability and there is no doubt that Rory Cleary gets the best out of him. He has won four races for us since coming to the yard and he seems in good form at home. If he puts his best hoof forward I think he is more than capable of running a nice race and picking up some prize money.
